Masters tennis players compete on the Copper Coast

An enthusiastic contingent of local tennis players from Murray Bridge’s hard court and lawn associations has travelled to Kadina to participate in the Copper Coast Regional Masters Games.

Many great matches were contested, several medals of all colours were earned, and a good time was had by all.

Time was also taken out away from the competition to enjoy the social aspects, food and delicacies of the area.

Next year’s Regional Masters Games will be held in Port Augusta.

Tim Reidy makes it back to back state titles

Tim Reidy has successfully defended his AMCA Nationals South Australian Title, taking out the 30-lap feature event at Murray Bridge Speedway over the weekend.

Reidy started the A-main on the front row alongside Stewart Grant Campbell and was quick to whip around the outside to lead the field through the opening lap.

Hopkins also challenged Campbell for second spot in the early stages, while drivers also contested positions further back, triggering a spin by Shannon Hilder which brought on the first caution on lap seven.

Glenmore Hattam goes on a back-nine rampage

Quality A-grader Glenmore Hattam has been named Saturday’s winner at Murray Bridge Golf Club after starting steadily and just getting better as his round went on.

Finishing five-up was a stunning effort off his five handicap, and it included a blitzkrieg of four up on the back nine to enable him to also claim the day’s pro comp.

A steady, no-nonsense player, Hattam often plays solid rounds without returning great scores or poor scores but this time it was definitely a great score.

“Italian Stallion” Mario Grande, a noted hater of par rounds, fronted up anyway and, to his surprise, won the A grade with a strong one-up.

Playing partner “Fiery” Freddy Carter’s constant bitching and moaning clearly didn’t put him off.

Powerfully built Jim Honner snared the B grade with a quality two-up, while former local footy umpire “Aussie” Bob McCormick was on fire in the C grade, where he dominated with a brilliant plus-four to be too good.

Meanwhile, five-handicapper Matt Kowald didn’t have the start he wanted when he scrubbed the first three holes but, keeping his cool in line with his seemingly unflappable temperament, he fought his way back to finish a more than creditable square for the day.

Obviously the moral to this story is … don’t muck up the first three holes and one’s score will be better.
