Husband-and-wife drag racers win at the Bend

A local husband-and-wife drag racing team has landed among the winners in the inaugural round of the Dragway at the Bend’s track championship.

Lisa Sherry finished first in the super sedans, while Dave Foster came second in the top sportsman category.

Sherry was quick to point out that all classes of drag racing were mixed-gender – “drags is always both guys and girls together, as it should be”.

Cohen Naughton’s golf career starts at a blistering pace

It has been terrific to see so many new young members taking up golf memberships in Murray Bridge in recent times, with more and more of them also now trying their luck in competitions after gaining their handicap.

Teenager Cohen Naughton is one such new member who debuted two weeks ago with a modest 31 points before backing up on Saturday with … 44 points.

Yep, off a 19 handicap he stormed to victory in the Stableford event, blasting the 80-strong field to smithereens.

It included a back nine of just 37 strokes, three over the card – a truly stunning round and certainly an exciting way to start one’s golf career.

His ability will now be very much tested, however, as Golflink has decreed he will be burdened with a nine – yes, nine – handicap the next time he fronts the starter.

That seems a bit stiff, but in the meantime, well done Cohen and enjoy the early limelight.

It was another day of high scores with C-graders Paul Anastasiou and Isaiah Durham also starring with 42 points apiece.

Durham, in particular, continued his stunning recent run of form, having now lost 10 strokes off his handicap in the past two months alone.

With more normal scores on their cards, president Bolton took out the A grade with 38 points from steady-as-she-goes Paul Harding, with 37, while veteran Rob Muster claimed B-grade honours with his 37 points.

It was good to see some new names winning the exotics for once, with retired farmer Neil Paech’s 22-point back nine claiming the pro comp and Maurice Wells winning the yabby with a sweet strike on the 11th.

It’ll be time for everyone to be sorted out with a stroke round this Saturday – good luck to all.

Justin Potter claims his first win as a trainer

At Murray Bridge on Friday, Crimson Vine provided local trainer Sam Burford a perfect farewell from the training ranks when she scored an impressive win first-up from a spell with Teagan Voorham in the saddle.

It was a day of high emotion, with one of SA’s leading riders, Justin Potter, landing his first win as a trainer in the colours of the late Brian Mueller when Sun Flipper was successful.

Local horseman Garret Lynch claimed a training double while Lachlan Neindorf took riding honours with a double aboard Runaway Belle and the well-bred Apache Discreet on debut for Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray.

Rifle club returns for 2024

Competition has returned to the Murray Bridge Rifle Club at the range of 400 metres.

It was a week later than planed due to hot weather the week before, but there were no such problems on Saturday as a southerly breeze kept the temperature pleasant but made sure the shooting was challenging, with no one managing to shoot a possible.

The closest in TR was a score of 48.05, shot by both Andrew Heard and Robert Paech.
