Seventy-one-year difference separates lawn bowls teammates
It’s not very often that members of the same team would be separated by an age difference of more than 70 years, but that was the case at the Jervois Bowling Club in their division three match against Tailem Bend on Saturday.
At 83, Ivy Kluske is not the oldest participant going around, but she is certainly one of the most experienced and respected bowlers you are likely to come across.
Her name is adorned on so many plaques with club and association titles that you could almost give up counting them, and she has legendary status within the club.
Her stellar career also includes a stint as president of Bowls SA, demonstrating her commitment to the sport.
The author can clearly remember Kluske’s advocacy for the sport when she was his primary school bus driver more than 50 years ago.
She was no doubt thrilled to have 12-year-old Lilly Fromm join her for Lilly’s first pennant game.
With Lilly’s father Shane and grandparents Heather and Graham also playing for Jervois, it created three generations playing alongside one another.
The club’s family-orientated atmosphere certainly helped, and Lilly acquitted herself very well, contributing to the side’s first win of the season.
Lilly is probably too young to appreciate it at the moment, but no doubt in years to come she will come to fondly remember lining up with a club legend.
Isaiah Durham shoots the lights out
Reigning junior club champion Isaiah Durham has proven to be the standout player in the Bridge when he topped a high-scoring field with a sizzling 43 points in Saturday’s Stableford competition.
Steadily growing bigger and stronger through his teenage years, Izzy can expect his 28 handicap to be pruned by at least another couple of shots by a wary handicapper who certainly wouldn’t have missed his stunning 25-point back nine.
Well played, young man.
Peter Erickson played a blinder in scoring 42 points to win the A grade, Adrian Pack had one point less to claim B grade, and Neil “Dog” Rothe a still brilliant 40 points to top C grade.
A lot of good golf was played by a majority of the 77-strong field in golf-friendly conditions.

Three clubs take all the points in Lower Murray bowls
In Lower Murray lawn bowls, Murray Bridge has taken all 12 points against a disappointing Jervois at Jervois, jumping out of the blocks quickly to establish match-winning breaks before their opponents settled.
None of the home side’s rinks could muster any more than two shots in total through the first 18 ends as Murray Bridge surged to an early 27-5 lead, then coasted to a 61-38 win.
Paul Smart, Peter Shilton, Ben Traeger and Andrew Meddle led the way with a 24-11 win over Shawn Hicks, Jeremy Scannell, Derek Vanderzon and Shane Fromm, with Meddle setting up the win with an impressive display of leading as they raced to a 17-2 lead after nine ends.
The locals had the better of the second half, but could not capitalise, scoring mainly singles in reply.
Bruce Attrill, David Kempe, Mark Callery and Tony Gill scored a five on the second end and a four right on the break to open up a 12-shot lead against Rodger Zarantonello, Daryl Little, Stephen Kroehn and Bob Solley.
Once again the locals were restricted to singles until the last two ends, where a pair of twos reduced the final margin to eight shots, 20-12.
Darren McIntosh, Brian Traeger, Brian Leckie and Mike Ferris held on for a 17-15 win over Trevor Mann, Graham Fromm, Graham Schenke and Neil Morris after leading by 11 shots early in the contest.
Mann picked up six of the last seven ends but could not quite make up the deficit.
Mannum also picked up all 12 points with an easy 70- 43 win over Tailem Bend at Mannum.
Gavin Pfeiffer, Garry Fowler, Kelvyn Newman and Lynton Jones were perhaps a little fortunate to only trail by two shots at the break after only winning three of 11 ends against Merv Stevens, Kylie Slattery, Colin Baxter and Bevan Jaensch, but quickly took control when play resumed to record a comfortable 23-13 win.
Graham Wakefield, Gary Odgers, John McDiamid and Marie Wachtel dominated through the middle stages after a slow start to get up by nine shots over Rob Hales, Nathan Mammone, Ian Shepherd and Glenda Shepherd.
Hales had the first five shots on the board, but only added one more before the break to Wakefield’s 12; the latter went on to an easy win.
Terry McDonnell, Ron Van Tijn, Steve Gregory and Tommy Towns were locked in an entertaining battle with Travis Schenke, Stuart Rooke, Kevin McDonald and Matthew Hogan, but eventually came out on top 25-18.
Two fours to Schenke in the first half put him one shot up at the break despite dropping a five himself.
Another five on the 19th gave McDonnell a vital break when the contest could have gone either way.
Karoonda completed the day of 12-point winners with a 14-shot win over RSL at Karoonda, with two rinks going down to the wire.
Rowan Zadow, Garry Mason, Rowan Tomkinson and John Wegner were never in any danger against Jason Sipos, David Graham, Matt Wynne and Garry Daniel, but would have been disappointed to let their opponents score the final eight shots.
Although they won 22-15, the final score did not reflect their dominance for all but the final three ends.
Josh Porker, Shaun Wood, Erin O’Malley and Bill Cornish were also in complete control before a resurgence from Anne Marie Kuchel, Kerri Bolt, Allan Wooldridge and Gilllian Newell levelled the scores with two ends remaining.
The RSL quartet trailed by nine shots, but four singles and a five reversed the momentum to set up a thrilling finish.
The locals steadied with a two and a four on the final end to take the points.
Ian Symonds, Gary Zadow, Jake Venning and Malcolm Waechter eventually prevailed by one shot over Noel Kneebone, Gordon Beelitz, Neil Zander and David Newell in a thrilling battle.
A three on the first end to Kneebone was the biggest margin until Symonds seemingly broke the shackles with a four on the 17th end to take a 15-10 lead and gain some breathing space.
Kneebone then responded with two, three and two to regain the lead and go into the final end with a two-shot lead and the momentum.
Symonds needed a three for the win, and achieved just that in a thriller.
Visitors come to play seniors tennis
At their November event, Murray Bridge and district seniors tennis players have hosted visitors from the Riverland, Mount Gambier and the Fleurieu Peninsula.
In good weather, 28 players took to the courts before lunch for some competitive play within their groups.
The afternoon consisted of mixed doubles, with much good fun and laughter and many good winning shots.
Lunch and afternoon tea added to fellowship off the courts.
Congratulations to the winners of the day: Jean Collins (Riverland), Sharon Watson (Murray Bridge), Noel Bailey (Fleurieu) and Theo Weinmann (Murray Bridge).
Gordon Harrison wins top off-rifle
Light winds, with a lot of variation in direction, were the prevailing conditions as members of the Murray Bridge Rifle Club began the 14th stage of the club championship on Saturday from 700 metres.
Over the course of the afternoon, however, those winds increased and began gusting predominately from the right, adding an element of chance to the day’s proceedings.
Strongly out of the blocks in the first round were the TR shooters, with Greg Traeger and his daughter Jasamine Irvine both scoring a 49.03.
