Sports reports: Ally Wilson gives Australia its first 3x3 basketball win at Paris 2024
Plus the latest in local Murray Bridge golf, rifle shooting and soccer, and River Murray footy and netball.
This post includes contributions from Michael Potts and Daniel Irvine.
A buzzer-beater by Murray Bridge’s Ally Wilson has given Australia its first win in women’s 3x3 basketball at the Paris Olympics.
Wilson sank a two-pointer to take the Gangurrus to 21 points, the magic number which instantly ends a 3x3 game, against Germany.
Cool as ice, she took the ball out to the arc, turned and sank the shot immediately after the Germans had scored to make it 19-all.
Wilson finished with eight points and five rebounds in the match.
Early on Wednesday morning, SA time, the Gangurrus had made their Olympic debut with a 22-14 loss to Canada.
At the time of publication, they were due to face China at 4.30pm and the USA at 8.30pm on Thursday, then Azerbaijan, Spain and France in their remaining group games.

Back to back Saturday wins for McPhee
It’s not done very often but local B grader Joshua McPhee completed consecutive Saturday competition victories on the weekend with a withering display of solid consistent golf.
His 42 points in the slidetrack awnings Stableford event saw him way out in front on the leaderboard.
To make it even more remarkable this is the second time McPhee has gone back to back with Saturday wins!
When he gets rolling he stays on the roll and he has put it out there that he is going for the treble in this Saturday's Stroke competition.
If successful that would be a first!
Shady local backstreet bookmakers are believed to be offering odds of 100/1 for this to eventuate, however.
In A grade Tyson Wright is hitting them well these days, now into a nine handicap, and he was on top here with an excellent 37 points.
Links Lady Bay visitor Adam Jennings journeyed across the Fleurieu to pinch a B grade win with his 36 points while Bob Logan hit top form to claim the C grade with a superb 39 point round.
Another visitor Phil Pannell, brother of C grade club champion Deane Pannell, was having a poor day with just 10 points after the front nine.
Told by big brother to pull up his socks on the 10th tee Phil Pannell responded in style with a 25 point back nine if you don't mind to end up with a respectable score and also a win in the Pro comp for best back nine.
Never give up!
Big Jim Honner pops in for a game every now and then and the big hitting B grader made this appearance well worth it when he eagled the par four 15th hole to snare a handful of balls from the eagles nest.
The weather looks good for a Stroke round this Saturday so come along and try to deny McPhee a threepeat!
Gordon Harrison takes out F Standard
A cold winter’s day greeted shooters last Saturday as they gathered at the Deed Range in Monarto to compete from 700 metres.
The wind was strong but mostly consistent from the right throughout the day.
David McDonald led the field in F-Class with a pair of 58s to finish top off rifle with 116.03.
In F-Class Standard, only centres were able to separate Frank Marshall from Gordon Harrison, with both scoring 109 for the day, but it was Gordon who won off rifle by a single centre with 109.04.
David Neumann and Peter Byass were not far away with 106.05 and 106.01.
No one was quite close enough, however, to take the handicap win away from David McDonald as he claimed the days trophy by eight tenths of a point.
Greg Traeger was the lone TR shooter for the day.
He recovered from a less than ideal first round to follow up with a 49 to finish on 91.05 for the day.
David Neumann and Wayne Halliday also had the misfortune of sharing the F-Class magpie award, with one bird each.
Next week shooters compete from 400 metres.
