Sports club urged to include players of all abilities
Two inclusive sporting sessions and a club information session will be held in early October to promote equal opportunities for people living with disabilities.
An inclusive sporting event will come to the Murraylands in early October to foster inclusivity and accessibility in sport and recreation.
The event will have two parts.
On Wednesday, October 9, two activity sessions for primary school-aged children with disability will be held at the Murray Bridge Showgrounds oval and basketball stadium.
From 10am-12pm and 3pm-5pm, sessions will be run with participation from state sporting bodies SANFL, SACA, Tennis SA, SA Country Basketball and Football SA.
These organisations will aim to give participants an opportunity to experience various sports in a supportive environment.
Murray Bridge Mayor Wayne Thorley said these events would be vital in delivering the council's commitment to creating a thriving community.
"Ensuring people living with disability are included and have the opportunity to participate equally in all aspects of community life is a key part of that vision," he said.
Volunteers, including local occupational therapists and service providers will be on hand to assist throughout the day.
Attendees can also enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with supplementary activities such as a quiet zone, a coffee van, and sausage sizzle.
Info session will help clubs include locals living with disability
In addition, an information session will also be held at the Murray Bridge Basketball Association clubrooms from 5.30 to 6.30pm.
Presentations will cover topics such as developing and adapting training and game practices for inclusivity, and creating an inclusive club environment.
A panel discussion featuring a Murraylands elite athlete and representatives from the Berri Blazers will offer valuable insights into fostering inclusivity at all levels of sport.
The Berri Blazers Basketball Club has run an inclusive basketball program, which gives players an opportunity to play in a safe nurturing environment.
Players are able to develop skills, confidence and build strong friendships all while being active.
The information session will be an ideal resource for local clubs, associations, parents and industry providers.
The Rural City of Murray Bridge encouraged parents, support workers, and children to attend to ensure a welcoming and supportive environment.
