Players and supporters past and present have celebrated Murray Bridge United Soccer Club’s 70th birthday in style on Saturday night at its clubrooms on Beatty Terrace.
Soccer, or “British football”, had been played in the Murraylands as long ago as 1920, and several local clubs were founded and floundered in the years afterwards.
But it wasn’t until the arrival of European migrants during the post-war years that the sport really gained a foothold.
Murray Bridge United actually traced its history back to the Tailem Bend Soccer Football Club, believed to have been founded in 1956 – hence the blue and gold colour scheme and eagle logo.
Only later did it move to Murray Bridge.
