As November nights grow milder, the first Christmas light displays are beginning to twinkle around Murray Bridge.

Brenden, Renee and young Lucy Roden are among the first families to have got the lights up on their street.

Stars and animals are arrayed around the lawn, icicles hang from their verandah and an inflatable reindeer and Father Christmas stand guard.

Seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they pass by is all the motivation they need, they say.

“Just do it, even if you start off small,” Brenden says.

“You do a couple of things, people say ‘oh, you’ve got some lights up, that looks nice’, so you add something to it ... all of a sudden you’ve got a whole yard full.

“We’ve had a few neighbours walk past and say they’re a bit jealous; we say ‘well, get started!’”

And if you’re going to go that far, you might as well share the spirit of the season with your neighbours all over the district by entering the Murray Bridge Christmas lights competition.

Entries in Murray Bridge’s 2022 Christmas lights competition are due by December 2.

Prizes worth $250 will be up for grabs in each of five categories:

  • Small display
  • Large display
  • Traditional display
  • Business display
  • Mayor’s award

Entries will be judged based on their presentation, layout and design; use of lights, colour, composition and variety; creativity and passion; and Christmas spirit.

Council CEO Michael Sedgman said the competition was a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of Christmas.

“I will be excited to see homes lit up with stunning displays once again,” he said.

“If you love Christmas and putting up light displays, or have been feeling like it’s time to bring a bit of cheer to your neighbourhood, this is the perfect opportunity.”

Prize winners will be announced at a ceremony on December 21.
