The River Murray Boat Owners Association will host a free community event along the riverbanks of Sturt Reserve next Sunday, October 18, to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

A parade will take place along the riverfront, with members of the association sailing past from 10am.

Joining the parade will be three paddle boats, including the PS Daisy, the oldest operational steam driven paddle boat on the River Murray.

The other paddle boats will be the PV Mayflower and the PV Matilda.

The Mayflower is offering the wider community a chance to be a part of the parade, with rides on offer through the Mannum Tourist Information Centre.

Joining the parade will be a piper who first played the bagpipes at the association's first River Ramble in 1986 to celebrate 150 years of South Australia.

The association was formed on October 18, 1976 by a group of boat owners who wanted to promote the safe use and enjoyment of the river.

During the association's earlier years, they worked with local councils and the state government to improve infrastructure along the River Murray.

While the association still promotes the safe use and enjoyment of the river, it now organises boating events each year, with the previously mentioned River Ramble being held every two years.

A book of the association's history on the River Murray has been written and will be published on the weekend.
