Rifle club contends with 'corrugated' conditions

A high turnout of 17 club members arrived to test themselves at 800 metres this past Saturday for the third round of the Murray Bridge Rifle Club’s annual championship.

Test was the operative word for the day in difficult weather conditions that club veteran Peter Byass described as “corrugated”.

Fluctuating wind strength and direction meant that even seasoned shooters were put through their paces, with generally lower than normal scores recorded in the first round.

Scores improved overall in the second round as shooters got a better read on the weather, none as much as Andrew Heard and Gordon Harrison, who both scored possibles in target rifle.

Ken Lynn also had a very good second round, scoring an impressive 58.02 in F-class open.

Top shooters for the day were Gordon Harrison in target rifle, scoring a 97.05, and John Cranwell once more in F-class, who showed consistency was key in scoring 112.05.

Both men’s efforts were also enough to secure them the handicap awards in their respective classes.

In an unlikely turn of events, the magpie award for target rifle this week went to perennial club champion Greg Traeger with two “birds”, much to the relief of those who win the unenviable award more regularly.

In F-class the honours went to Ian Taylor with three “birds”.

Next week’s competition is scheduled to be 300 metres.
