Repair works will close old Murray Bridge on some weekdays
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport will repair the 1879 road bridge during June and July.
Murray Bridge’s 142-year-old road bridge will be closed on and off from this week as it undergoes some repair work.
The state Department for Infrastructure and Transport announced last week that works would be completed between 9.30am and 3.30pm on 10 weekdays between this Tuesday and late July.
Exact dates will be chosen based on the weather, and advertised on electronic noticeboards at each end of the bridge.
For what it’s worth, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts increasing showers on Tuesday, a shower or two on Wednesday, showers on Thursday and showers easing on Friday, with temperatures in the mid to high teens.
Emergency services, pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the old road bridge while works are underway.
However, motorists will have to detour via the Swanport Bridge, five kilometres downstream.
The department said the works were needed to “ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the bridge”, which was built in 1879.
Workers have already been active in recent weeks, taking measurements atop the bridge and working on scaffolding beneath it.
