Reflections on Homelessness exhibition to launch at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery
The exhibition will showcase locals' experiences in light of National Homelessness Week, starting on August 5.
An exhibition, Reflections on Homelessness, will be launched at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery on Monday to mark National Homelessness Week in 2024.
It will share the stories of people who have faced hardship and homelessness in the Murraylands district.
More than 50 exhibits, including photographs, audio and art, will on display throughout August.
The art aims to highlight the experience of local people who have been impacted by homelessness.
The launch will take place on Monday, the first day of National Homelessness Week, at 11am.
AC Care regional homelessness service manager Thanuja Hiripitiyage said the exhibition would offer deep insights into the lives of people who had experienced or been at risk of homelessness.
“This is a collection of personal stories and expressions from community members who have faced significant challenges in their lives with vastly different journeys and outcomes,” she said.
The exhibition was first shown in 2022, after AC Care encouraged locals to share their experiences of overcoming or avoiding homelessness.
“The impacts of the regional housing crisis and rising cost of living having only grown (since then),” Ms Hiripitiyage said.
“These impacts are being felt across a broad range of people and circumstances, but this exhibition is a great opportunity to reflect and better understand how these issues affect our community’s most vulnerable.”
There was no “one face” of homelessness, she said, and people experiencing hardship did not give up on striving for a better life despite the challenges they faced.
“Homelessness is only an experience as part of their life journey and does not define a person’s worth and right to respect,” she said.
Murray Bridge Regional Gallery director Fulvia Mantelli said she looked forward to presenting the thought-provoking exhibition.
“The exhibition is a valuable opportunity for audiences to take a moment to broaden our minds about what homelessness means, and different ways to think about timely social issues,” she said.
The Reflections on Homelessness exhibition will be displayed until September 1.
