Racer dies in accident at the Bend Motorsport Park

A motorbike racer has died in a crash at the Bend Motorsport Park over the weekend.

Emergency services were called out to the circuit at Tailem Bend just before 11am on Sunday, but were unable to save the person.

A round of Motorcycling SA’s road race championship was being held at the venue at the time, with the circuit in its international configuration – the same track used by Supercars and Australian Superbikes.

Murray Bridge News understands that the person who died was a participant.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Road closed at Burdett after serious crash

Meanwhile, emergency services have raced to the scene of a serious crash at Burdett.

A car ran into a tree on Boundary Road, about a kilometre north of the Karoonda Highway, around 8.30 on Monday morning.

SA Police did not initially indicate whether anyone had been hurt or worse in the collision, but the Medstar helicopter and major crash investigators were both on their way within minutes.

Boundary Road was closed soon after the crash, and motorists were urged to take another route.

Two drivers pulled over

Finally, traffic police have picked up two motorists on Murraylands roads over the weekend:

• A 19-year-old man from the Australian Capital Territory who was allegedly doing 169 kilometres per hour on the Mallee Highway at Peake around 10.15am on Friday; he lost his licence for six months, was fined $2126 and copped nine demerit points
• A 61-year-old Murray Mallee man who was allegedly driving a B-double on the Old Princes Highway at Long Flat while using methamphetamine and cocaine on Friday, and who had also allegedly failed to complete his log book or get enough rest in a 24-hour period; he lost his licence for three months and will appear in court
