Murray Bridge locals have gathered at Edwards Square to launch a push-up challenge which will raise funds for mental health.

The launch event, held by Headspace Murray Bridge and Snap Fitness, encouraged local participants to complete their first 50 push-ups together.

Those completing the challenge will aim for a total of 3214 push-ups from June 4-26, to honour the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2023.

Snap Fitness club manager Abe Jammoul said that every push mattered when it came to the challenge.

"It reminds people that we’re here from them, we’re thinking of them – those who suffer from mental health issues," he said.

Local resident Tiffany Henderson said she was excited to advocate for mental health in her second year participating in the challenge.

Although she completed 50 push-ups at the event, she said her goal was to go above that by the end of the day.

“We get given a target (on the app) that we have to do each day, and my goal is to complete all of them," Ms Henderson said.

Participants are encouraged to use the Push for Better app, which allows users to track their progressed and amount of funds raised, while also giving them daily push-up goals to hit.

Another participant, radio presenter Craig Pitman, said he was also excited to be tackling the challenge for a second time.

Mr Pitman said the challenge was a good reminder to keep up with fitness and mental health, and to start having those conversations with people around you.

"(A great thing) about the challenge is that it teaches you resilience: if you can get through the next bit, it becomes easier and easier," he said.
