Australia’s most prominent astronomer is coming to the Murraylands, and you’re invited to spend the night learning about space with him.

Professor Fred Watson OAM is Australia’s first astronomer at large, a ground-breaking researcher into the history of our galaxy, a Eureka Prize winner, podcaster, and a man with an asteroid named after him.

He and his wife, Marnie Ogg, regularly offer experiences, food and adventure to tour groups around the world through their business, Dark Sky Traveller.

Next month, they’re coming to Walker Flat.

Juggle House Experiences invites you to join a “star party” to celebrate their visit to the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve on Saturday, July 6.

As keynote speaker, Professor Watson will discuss the future of astronomy, the James Webb Telescope and the world’s worst telescopes.

Plenary speakers will include:

  • Ms Ogg, a founding member of the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance
  • Kenneth Wishaw, secretary of the Brisbane Astronomical Society
  • Simone Bailey, Mayor of the Mid Murray Council
  • Chris Tugwell, founder of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve
  • Tour host Kelly Kuhn

Local experts will shed light on your surroundings within the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

“The speakers cover topics that relate to everyday living in an accredited dark sky place, so we’re hoping this event will appeal to locals residing in the whole of the Murraylands region,” Kelly says.

“It’s a terrific opportunity to get out of the house in winter, to hear from local businesses already involved and to understand how we can all play a role in keeping our area dark.”

So book your ticket, put on your “star party” attire and join in a fun night at Walker Flat Community Hall with a three-course meal, exhibitors, bonfire, music, and a lucky door prize of Professor Watson’s book Why is Uranus Upside Down?

The night will also feature a special dark sky virtual reality display thanks to Torrens University Australia and Mannum Dock Museum of River History.

Don’t miss out on this stellar opportunity.
