Fifty years ago this weekend, Dennis Newell’s crazy idea came to fruition.

The Ngarrindjeri legend of the mulyawonk, a creature said to live in the River Murray and prey on greedy fishers and children swimming alone, somehow inspired the fibreglass beast which was unveiled by then-Premier Don Dunstan in 1972.

The original, much scarier bunyip was first named Bert, but later became Bertha after she gave birth to a freakish baby who has since left the cave.

The beloved attraction now scares about 20,000 visitors every year at the press of a button.

Much about her has changed over the years, but she is still just the same on the inside – her roar is reportedly still played through the same tape deck Mr Newell took out of a car stereo 50 years ago.

Everyone is invited to the bunyip’s birthday party at 5pm this Saturday.
