Alex Wilson named MVP at basketball’s 3x3 Asia Cup

The Australian Gangurrus are coming home with gold as both our men’s and women’s teams finished a perfect tournament at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in Singapore on Sunday night.

Taking on rivals New Zealand in the final, the women won 18-13 in a tight contest, with Alex Wilson nailing a clutch three to help secure the victory and back-to-back titles for our women.

Wilson was named tournament MVP on the back of an impressive performance, while Anneli Maley, Marena Whittle and Lauren Mansfield all played their part in the campaign.

Coached by former NBL legend Damon Lowery, the quartet went undefeated throughout the event, beating the likes of India, Thailand, and Mongolia.

Wilson said to win again with the same group made it even more special.

“It is an amazing feeling and not something that happens very often in any sporting code,” she said.

“We have such a special group that all play for each other and we just want to win.

“I feel like any one of us could have won MVP as we all showed out at different times in the tournament and that’s the beauty of our group.

“Being named MVP of the tournament was a shock but is an amazing feeling for me.”

Eleven-year-old wins Saturday golf competition

Well, this isn’t something that happens every week: an 11-year old winning Murray Bridge Golf Club’s main competition.

Ginger-haired youngster Levi Ashton showed his untapped potential by reeling off a personal best 81 off the stick on Easter Saturday to give him a whopping 41 Stableford points and a narrow win over fellow B-grader Doc Altmann.

Having only been a member for less than a year, the diminutive junior’s handicap continues to drop: 18 on Saturday and no doubt one less at his next round.

He has also quickly caught on with the usual winner’s lingo of having “left quite a few shots out there” in claiming he should have had at least 45 points after missing a few short putts and easy chips.

Congratulations Levi – let’s see how far you can go.

In A grade Michael Pitcher continued his red-hot form by finishing the winner with 38 points while, as mentioned, Doc Martin Altmann had a blinder in taking out the B grade with 40 points.

Trevor “Tina” Turner was successful in C grade, showing his class with 37.

Tom Payet dominates Australasian championship weekend

After capturing the preliminary feature of the SA Speedcar Championship on night one, Western Australia’s Tom Payet has continued his winning run, taking out the $20,000 Australasian 50-Lap Speedcar Championship at Murray Bridge Speedway on Sunday night.

The A-main feature event had Kaidon Brown line up on the front row alongside Nick Parker, with Brown quickly taking the lead and Payet passing into second.

A collision between Ryan Jones and Robert Heard only two laps in would bring on the first caution, bringing the end to Jones’ campaign with a flat tyre.

Indoor bowls association plans comeback season

Murray Bridge’s indoor bowls association has been conducting competitions on Friday nights since approximately 1956.

Originally it was predominately filled by teams from various church groups, however this support has waned over the years.

With the onset of COVID-19, the sport, like many other sports, went into recession, and the association unfortunately witnessed the departure of many of its senior players.

Currently there are a small number of passionate people trying to keep the game of indoor bowls alive.

So, the association is looking to reestablish its competition and will hold practice nights for interested players to come and try the game at the Monarto Lutheran hall on Schenscher Road commencing at 7.30pm on April 12, 19 and 26.

With mats, balls and a hall venue provided, it is a very cost-effective evening for participants, at $2 per evening per player.

It is easy to learn, family friendly and extremely suitable for people of all ages, as well as being heaps of fun.

Following a game of bowls, many players stay for supper at a cost of a gold coin donation and enjoy fellowship with the other members.

The association would welcome anyone to come along on these nights to experience indoor bowls.

Traeger, Cranwell star at rifle shoot

It may have been closer than the previous week, but this week’s shoot from 500 metres was still challenging for members of the Murray Bridge Rifle Club as they contended with a wind that shifted from left to right all afternoon.

Several shooters excelled despite the conditions, with Greg Traeger, Robert Paech and John Cranwell all shooting possibles.

Others also managed high scores, including a 49 from Andrew Heard in TR, a 59 from Ian Elston in F-open and 58s from Adrian and Karen Conlon.
