Alex Wilson and the Gangurrus women are heading to Paris
The Gangurrus have made history at the last-chance FIBA Olympic qualifiers in Japan over the weekend, defying all odds to become the inaugural 3x3 team to represent Australia at an Olympic Games.
A movie-script sequence of events played out for Anneli Maley, Ally Wilson, Marena Whittle and Lauren Mansfield, who had to overcome a heartbreaking overtime loss in the opener to remain the last team standing in Utsunomiya, Japan.
Wilson sealed the final against Canada from the free throw line with seconds remaining to push the score to 19-16.

Ian Fletcher breaks the ice at Murray Bridge Golf Club
Newish member Ian Fletcher broke his duck with a maiden Saturday victory scoring an impressive nett 64 to take out the day’s stroke event in style.
On yet another gorgeous autumn day, the 82-strong field enjoyed pristine golfing conditions, although scoring still didn’t appear to be that easy out there for some reason.
Fletcher fended off the challenge from fellow C-grader Bob Logan to just hold on by a shot though.
Golfing machine Jeff Morgan topped A grade with a regulation nett 68; it could have been a lot better but for an uncharacteristic seven on the par four 16th.
Unorthodox but effective-swinging B-grader Conythe Jones won his grade but still wasn’t happy, while Bob Logan edged out larger-than-life club legend Graham Edwards by a stroke to snare the C grade.
Meanwhile, the opening round of the annual club champs series also got underway on Saturday with a new format.
With only two qualifying rounds being played, there will be little margin for error for players to make it through to the final eight before those qualifiers then play off in a sudden death match play series.
Pre event favourites Aaron Zrim and Greg Lindeberg have got out of the blocks well with gross scores of 73 and 74, respectively, to be up the top early on; Mr Consistent, Jeff Morgan, is right there too with a strong 74.
More-than-handy A-graders Brett Altschwager, Michael Pitcher and Luke Woods have given themselves good chances of qualifying with their 76 and 77s, but one of the pre-post favourites, Mark Bolton, has some work to do after posting a 78 to find himself down the list a bit and needing to be careful in round two or finding himself being pipped by others snapping at his heels.
Andrew Meddle, Keith Durham, Greg Lannan and even the returning Tyson Pratt are capable of sneaking in if they can hold things together on Saturday.
