The next stage of a master plan for Sturt Reserve is about to progress with the replacement of the lower timber wharf.

Construction for the lower wharf is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks, with a targeted completion date of December 2024.

It will be another milestone in the transformation of Murray Bridge’s riverfront into a high quality leisure destination.

The project comes three years after funding was announced for a the wharf, and almost two years after the opening of a shelter on the wharf in late 2022.

The next stage will involve upgrades to existing lower wharf and landside facilities within the reserve’s heritage and tourism precinct.

Infrastructure and environment general manager Thuyen Vi-Alternetti said the Murray Bridge council was committed to delivering infrastructure improvements that the community needed.

“Despite the challenges posed by the 2022-23 floods, we are thrilled to see this project progress,” she said.

Mayor Wayne Thorley said the project was a significant step forward for local tourism operators and the community.

“Sturt Reserve is a vital part of our community and its transformation into a world-class leisure destination is something we can all be proud of,” he said.

Traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the wharf precinct during the construction period; more details will be available soon.

The adjacent heritage wharf will remain closed while the council seeks solutions and appropriate funding for its remediation.
