‘It’s lovely to be acknowledged’ – so nominate someone for an Australia Day award today
Nominations for Murray Bridge’s 2023 citizen of the year award, and three other awards, close this Friday. Here’s why Cathy Smith says you should nominate someone.
This sponsored post is brought to you by the Rural City of Murray Bridge.
It’s a special feeling to be named Murray Bridge’s citizen of the year.
Cathy Smith knows it well – she took the honour in 2022, in recognition of her mental health advocacy and community work.
Now, with nominations for the 2023 awards closing this Friday, she urged everyone in the community to think about who else deserved recognition.
“It was lovely to be acknowledged for the things I just do, not because of wanting any accolades or anything like that – you see something that needs to be done, something you enjoy, so you do put your hand up to help out,” she said.
“You volunteer because you want to do something for your community.
“Nominating someone for citizen of the year is about acknowledging them for the time and effort they put into something, whether it’s animals, whether it’s conservation or whether it’s helping people.”
Nominate a local legend for an Australia Day award today
Nominations are now open for Murray Bridge’s Australia Day awards, but get in quick – they’re due by this Friday, November 18.
If you know someone doing something great in the community, nominate them for:
Citizen of the year
Young citizen of the year
Community event of the year
Active citizenship award
Recently retired Mayor Brenton Lewis encouraged everyone to think about the people in their lives who deserved to be recognised.
“We really do have a fantastic community here, full of everyday people who do extraordinary things, and it’s important to take the time to acknowledge their achievements, show our thanks and inspire others,” he said.
“These people often go quietly about their business, not looking for praise, but it’s always nice to be appreciated, so be a legend and nominate a legend today.
“Let that friend, workmate, dedicated volunteer, quiet achiever or stand-out talent at your community club know that you see them and the great work that they do, and that you value their contribution.”
