An electrical fault is suspected to have caused one of two house fires reported in the Murraylands early on Tuesday morning.

The first fire started around 1.30am, in a rumpus room at a home on Tooma Drive at Riverglades.

Two residents escaped without injury, and Country Fire Service and Metropolitan Fire Service personnel were able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the property.

It sustained about $50,000 worth of damage, which the occupants hoped their insurance would be able to cover.

Only 90 minutes later, CFS volunteers were called to a rural property on Blackett Road at Tailem Bend after reports of another fire.

Burning there was a 20-by-20-metre shed which had been converted into a home.

Its occupant escaped, and firefighters were once again able to prevent it from spreading into the surrounding paddocks.

The damage caused in this case was likely to be greater than $50,000.

The Tailem Bend fire gave the local CFS brigade a chance to test out the new 44 truck it had received only hours beforehand.

The brigade’s old 44 unit will be refurbished and sent to another station.

Investigators were yet to determine the cause of either fire on Tuesday morning.
