New development is on the cards at Thomas Foods International’s Pallamana plant as the company improves its handling of organic waste.
TFI has applied to build a new composting facility to the north of its three-year-old meat processing plant.
The lagoon and other infrastructure would be capable of processing 40,000 tonnes of organic material per year, sourced from TFI’s plants at Pallamana, Murray Bridge and Lobethal.
Any smell from the facility would be “largely” contained to an area of farmland within about one kilometre, according to TFI.
Neighbours and other members of the public have until next Tuesday, July 14, to provide feedback on the proposal.
Murray Bridge News has sought further information from TFI.
The company opened its new plant in 2023, more than five years after a fire which destroyed its main facility in Murray Bridge.
Environmental concerns, including smells, have long been a worry for nearby residents, both before the fire and since.
However, the company has done much to address those concerns, with some encouragement from the Environment Protection Authority.
The Pallamana plant is in the middle of an area which the Murray Bridge council is in the process of rezoning to encourage rural industrial development.
