Callington Primary School has had the great pleasure of officially opening a new nature play space.

A range of guests attended an opening ceremony last Wednesday, including past and present governing council members and representatives from the local education team, Callington Kindergarten and Arbury Park Outdoor School.

They were joined by the families, staff and students of Callington Primary School to celebrate and thank those that contributed to the build.

The project was undertaken by designers Betterland with local resources donated by Arbury Park and Heidelberg Materials, formerly known as Hanson Australia.

Betterland did an amazing job of converting an old and minimally used space into a creative, imaginative and well-designed wonderland for students to explore, play and have fun with their friends.

Principal Suyin McDonald wanted the day to be about taking the time to stop and show gratitude to all those who helped make this nature play come to life.

Many thanks were shared, student leaders spoke of their gratitude on behalf of all students and students ranging from ages 6-12 spoke about what they loved about their new space.

  • โ€œI love making paints and painting on the wall and building cubbies. I love to play fairy gardens with my friends.โ€ โ€“Avalie, year 5
  • โ€œI like building new things ... I made a house and decorated it ... I hope everyone would like to play in our nature play.โ€ โ€“Scarlett, year 2

  • โ€œI love the nature play because I love climbing, building huts and walking on the stones of the snake.โ€ โ€“Emerson, year 1
  • I like finding sticks around the play and using them as wands, using my imagination and making really cool forts.โ€ โ€“Josh, year 4

The nature play space was officially opened by two year 5/6 students, Lara and Ila, who cut the yellow-and-gold ribbon; then students were free to play and explore.

Guests were invited to watch the children engaging in this rich new space and experience the joy that it has brought to all of the children of Callington Primary School.
