Mobile phone users should get better coverage at Mypolonga from now on.

A new Optus tower on Woolshed Road was switched on last Wednesday.

While it will give Optus customers the greatest boost, it will also give Mypolonga more reliable emergency coverage – 000 calls are always connected via the nearest available phone tower.

Liberal state MP Adrian Pederick said it would fill a significant coverage gap in the Murraylands, benefiting both locals and tourists.

Federal MP Tony Pasin also welcomed the development.

However, he has long urged both telecommunications companies and his own government to do more to improve regional phone coverage.

“There are currently almost 400 community identified mobile blackspots in (my electorate of) Barker,” he said in response to an industry review last month.

“There is not a day that goes by that I don’t speak to a constituent who complains to me about having to pay for a mobile phone service they are unable to use for much of the time.

“It’s the number-one issue raised with me by constituents.”

The Mypo phone tower was originally promised back in 2019, and approved by the Murray Bridge council in 2021.

Its installation was jointly funded by Optus and the state and federal governments.
