Murraylands youths will share their reality in Homelessness Week exhibition
AC Care, Murray Bridge Community Centre and the Murray Bridge council have collaborated on an exhibition of artworks by local 14- to 17-year-olds.
A two-day art exhibition in Murray Bridge next week will explain what it’s like to be young and homeless in the Murraylands.
Our Time is Now, showing at the Square Community Centre next Wednesday and Thursday, will feature artworks by local teenagers on themes of homelessness and hardship.
The exhibition was scheduled to coincide with National Homelessness Week.
AC Care CEO Shane Maddocks said it showed the diversity of experiences among people who had experienced homelessness.
“There is no one face of homelessness, and this exhibition is a testament to that – these young people all view that experience differently,” he said.
“One point that is apparent from this exhibition is just how deeply poverty affects and is understood by young people in our communities.
“Many of the words reflect on the instability of homelessness and how it unsettles individuals and families alike.”
AC Care homelessness service manager Thanuja Hiripitiyage said she, too had been impressed by the maturity and understanding the young artists had shown.
AC Care staged a similar pop-up exhibition at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery last July.
Mr Maddocks called on all levels of government, businesses and service providers to commit to breaking the cycle of disadvantage that pushed people towards homelessness.
