The head coach at the Murraylands Gymnastics Academy has taken out top spot in the inaugural Power of Her Recognition Awards.

Jemma Tilley was recognised on Wednesday for her leadership of the academy’s revival after devastating storm damage.

After being forced to close for six months in 2023, the academy reopened in a temporary facility and adapted programs to fit the space available.

The academy was recently awarded $1.5 million to build a new facility at Murray Bridge East, and another $320k to help purchase more than 50 new pieces of equipment, thanks to advocacy from her and those around her.

This new equipment transformed the academy's training space and created opportunities for new programs.

A vocal advocate for gender inclusivity, Ms Tilley has implemented many programs and policies to enact change for females.

Her leadership has been a catalyst for change and she has created a lasting impact for young girls to build confidence and a life-long love for gymnastics in the Murraylands.

Ms Tilley thanked the award judges and Courtney Blacker for nominating her.

"Like many women in sport, we come to being in leadership roles through passion and heart for the sport as well as being able to support our children in their interests," she said.

"My love of gymnastics started as a child, participating in the sport in the 90s, and it was then reinforced after a 19-year break and bringing my daughter to try a kindergym session.

"Gymnastics is an amazing sport which crosses multiple generations, from weeks-old babies to 90 years plus.

"Our club has had some trying times over the last few years, and it has been a struggle to keep our 40-year club running.

"Without the help and support of the amazing women in our club, we would not be where we are today."

About the Power of Her awards

The awards recognise individuals championing gender equality through their outstanding contribution to their organisation and the advancement of sport for women and girls.

Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Katrine Hildyard congratulated each recipient.

"When we see women celebrated for their strength and talent, it gives us an opportunity to shift attitudes about women and the roles they can play," she said.

"These winners demonstrate extraordinary dedication to ensuring girls and women of all abilities can deepen their involvement in their chosen sport.

"Ensuring our state is one that empowers girls and women to equally and actively participate in every aspect of life, including sport."

The Power of Her received $18 million in funding over three years for dedicated facilities, improvements and programs that will grow female sporting participation.
