Fireworks, illuminated buildings and an augmented-reality bunyip will feature at this weekend’s Murray River Glows festival.

The full program for the “celebration of strength and unity”, which will run from this Thursday to Sunday, includes many items of interest.

Only the hardest of hearts can resist a good fireworks display, but you don’t have to resist, as Saturday night’s fireworks extravaganza will illuminate the River Murray.

The fireworks will begin at 8.15pm above Wharf Hill and Sturt Reserve, and it’s a good idea to secure prime viewing spots at Sturt Reserve, Wharf Hill, Murray Bridge Community Club, the 1924 Steakhouse or the Bridgeport Hotel.

Every night from 5pm to 9pm, Wharf Hill will come alive with a light spectacular, brought to you by Smartalec Lighting.

Light and colour will also transform the town hall, Murray Bridge Library and the historic Ridley’s mill.

Speaking of magic, through the power of augmented reality, you will be able see the mulyawonk – the bunyip – emerge from the depths of the river.

You can continue the AR journey on the Murray Bridge ARt walk on Seventh Street where, with the aid of your smart phone, you will see a fusion of art and technology.

The Murray Bridge Regional Gallery will be open for extended hours, from 10am–7pm, on Friday and Saturday so you can grab a glow stick, be part of the Where’s Your Wonderland activities and possibly win a prize.

On Friday, gardening guru Sophie Thomson from Gardening Australia will present a special program to inspire you to rebuild and revitalise your garden after the floods.

The Regrowth: Garden Recovery After Flood program will be at Edwards Square, at the corner of Swanport Road and Bridge Street, from 10am to 3pm, and free morning tea and lunch will be provided – although it’s a daytime event, Sophie will be aglow with helpful knowledge.

A section of East Terrace, from Bridge Street to South Terrace, will be closed to traffic for the River Murray Glows event between 4pm and 10pm on Saturday.
