The Mallee Highway has reopened following a truck fire at Elwomple, near Tailem Bend, on Wednesday morning.

Three Country Fire Service trucks were called to the fire at about 1.30am.

Approximately 10 CFS firefighters managed the blaze, which had fully engulfed the truck and spread to surrounding grass areas.

The driver of the truck, who was uninjured, reported having smelled smoke and seen a glow under the truck's tyres.

In hot and challenging conditions, with temperatures already high and more extreme heat expected later in the day, crews were able to suppress the fire using foam to reduce its intensity.

The estimated damage to the truck is approximately $100,000.

The Mallee Highway was temporarily closed but had reopened to a single lane by 9am; emergency services were expected to remain in and around the area for a little longer.
