The Murray Bridge community is invited to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) this Friday, December 6.

Observed worldwide on December 3, IDPWD promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities.

In Australia, the day unites government bodies, schools, organisations, businesses and individuals to foster a more inclusive society for the 5.5 million Australians living with a disability.

A local event will take place from 10am to 1.30pm at the Murray Bridge Rowing Centre, between Wharf Road and Murray Cods Drive.

Mayor Wayne Thorley encouraged residents to attend, and to reflect on the importance of the day.

“IDPWD is a special opportunity to come together, learn and celebrate and a reminder that breaking down barriers and encouraging a more inclusive and respectful society is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.

“We are a diverse and welcoming community, where people get involved, contribute to and are supported by the community around them.”

The celebration will begin with a welcome to country ceremony, setting up for a day filled with engaging and accessible activities, including sailing, TADSA adaptive bikes, face painting, a petting zoo, a range of inclusive sports, quiet zone, a silent disco and a visit from Santa.

Guests can also enjoy a complimentary healthy barbecue lunch.

As an added bonus, one lucky attendee will win a $250 gift card; you've got to be there to win it.
