Murray Bridge snags 2024 Tour Down Under stage start
One of the world’s great cycling races will run through Murray Bridge, Jervois and Wellington next January.
The Tour Down Under is coming back to the Murraylands.
A stage of the men’s cycling race will start in Murray Bridge on January 19, 2024, organisers revealed on Sunday.
From a start line on Bridge Street, riders will cross the old road bridge to the east side and loop around Siesta Drive, Thiele Road and Ross Road.
They will then head back across the bridge and down the main street, then down Swanport Road.
Riders will continue on through Woods Point, Jervois and Wellington before making for Langhorne Creek and finishing the 136.2-kilometre stage at Port Elliot.
State Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison hoped the event would encourage cycling fans from all around the world to visit South Australia – and spend their money here.
“We know how important the Santos Tour Down Under is to South Australia’s tourism sector and its power to capture international attention,” she said.
“We are delighted to welcome fans once again to celebrate not only cycling, but also South Australia’s vibrant offerings, such as food, wine and our beautiful regions.”
The Tour Down Under website points visitors to attractions such as Monarto Safari Park, the Bend Motorsport Park, Murray Bridge Regional Gallery and the Round House; as well as producers including Cottage Box Chocolates, Little Local Co and Willow Point Wines.
It will be the third time the TDU has visited the Murraylands.
The last was in 2020, when a stage of the men’s tour finished and a stage of the women’s tour started on Murray Bridge’s main street.
A women’s stage started at the Bend Motorsport Park in 2018, too.
The women’s tour will not come to the Murraylands in 2024.
