A Murray Bridge High School graduate has been recognised for her academic achievement ahead of National Reconciliation Week.

T’Nesha Gibson received the Chief Executive’s Reconciliation Award from the state Department for Education last Wednesday.

After graduating high school last year, she achieved one of the highest Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks among South Australia’s Aboriginal students: an 84.75.

She is currently working towards a double degree in biotechnology and chemical engineering at the University of Adelaide, while taking a bus from Murray Bridge each day.

High school principal Ruth Mussger said T’Nesha had received fantastic support from her family.

“We wish her the very best in her educational journey and we at Murray Bridge High School are incredibly proud of her efforts,” she said.

A total of 12 South Australian students were recognised for their academic achievement at the awards ceremony.

Martin Westwell, Chief Executive of the Department for Education, said the skills and confidence young Aboriginal people gained from their time at school helped open future opportunities.

“This is reinforced by the support and care of their families, friends and the staff who encourage them every day at school,” he said.
