After almost three years of disruption, the biggest ever upgrade of the Murray Bridge and District Community Club has been completed.
The community club’s dining room has shifted upstairs, a new sports bar is finished downstairs, its award-winning gaming room has been redesigned.
Most importantly for members with mobility impairments, a lift has also been installed to provide much easier access to the upper level.
The upgrade cost a total of about $700,000 and took a good deal longer than the club had anticipated.
The venue was forced to close for more than two months when it was besieged by floodwaters over the summer of 2022-23.
Federal MP Tony Pasin helped manager Shane Barton-Ancliffe and members of the club’s committee cut a ribbon to mark the completion of the renovations on Friday night.
Hundreds of club and community members ate, drank and made merry inside as the band Arkhive played.
Riverfront restaurant plans shelved for now
Only one element of the upgrade was left out, in the end.
The club had planned to turn the former rowing shed on its lower level into a riverfront restaurant.
However, Mr Barton-Ancliffe said that idea was now on the backburner, and no more renovations were planned at present.
The steakhouse attached to the new rowing club next door completed a similar expansion, accommodating more riverfront dining, last year.
Community grants are now available
On the bright side, he said, the club would now have more funds to share with the community via its quarterly grants program.
Throughout the year, the club provides grants of up to $1000 to local sporting and community organisations.
Recent recipients have included Bridge Burlesque, Mobilong Rotary, Tailem Bend Football Club and Murray Bridge’s swimming club.
