Murray Bridge Christmas parade returns to the streets

Thousands of people have celebrated the start of the festive season in Murray Bridge at the city’s Christmas parade and a riverfront festival.

For the first time since 2019, Father Christmas paraded down Bridge Street, accompanied by marching bands, tinsel-bedecked company cars and hundreds of waving children.

Awaiting them, and the crowd, at a riverfront Christmas festival at Sturt Reserve were rides, sideshows, food vendors, stalls and musicians.

While a splash of rain kept a few people away, many returned in time for a fireworks show over the River Murray at 9pm.

Penny Heighes, a member of the Business Murray Bridge committee which organised the event, said community feedback had been mostly positive.

“Considering we had the weather against us, and it was the first year back after COVID, travelling the streets of Murray Bridge and throwing lollies out, it went very, very well,” she said.

“Talking to people afterwards, they were all happy.”

The organisers had also learned a few lessons this time around, she said, and would make the parade and festival even better in 2023.
