Agriculture students from around the Murraylands are celebrating their successes – and recuperating – after an epic week at the Royal Adelaide Show.
In particular, Murray Bridge High School had its best showing in years.
One of the school’s wether goats was named overall grand champion, and its students exhibited the champion wether fleece, too.
Ag teacher Grace Sampson said the various ribbons the school had brought home were the result of three terms of hard work and preparation.
“The sheep and goats came in unbroken at the start of the year, so the kids have halter-trained them,” she said.
“The cattle had a little bit of training, but it’s the kids’ job to train all the animals, wash them, brush them, feed them and everything.”
The team had no expectation that its champion goat, Happy, would achieve such high honours.
“We didn’t think our goats were going to get anything,” Ms Sampson said.
“Still, we put them in, hoped for the best and got the top award.”
Not bad for a goat that was bred and raised at the school’s Roper Road training farm.

Other Murraylands schools also exhibited, including Unity College, whose students won a number of ribbons in categories including beef cattle and sheep.
First-place winners were:
- A Limousin led by Daniel Bormann in the schools purebred export weight class for beef cattle
 - Molly Mason in the young dairy cattle handler competition, ages 12-15
 - Grace Carey in the Illawarra handler competition

Next up: the Murray Bridge Show in a couple of weeks.
After surviving the arena at Wayville, it should be a cinch, right?
