More than two years after a deal was struck to guarantee the future of the Riverglades wetland, the Murray Bridge council is taking the next step.
This month, in a draft plan, the council committed to preserving water quality, flora, fauna and public recreation at the wetland by:
- Maintaining and expanding walking trails
- Organising volunteer planting days and public open days
- Controlling weeds, rabbits, foxes and cats
- Monitoring algae and salinity levels
A recently completed fence around a turtle nesting area, funded by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, was one example of that commitment.
The draft plan did not contain specific information about, for example, whether or when the loop trail around the wetland might be repaired.
But infrastructure and environment general manager Thuyen Vi-Alternetti said the wetland was a significant community asset, and that the council would maintain and conserve it “for the benefit of the whole community”.
She encouraged residents to offer feedback on the draft plan before March 1.

The four parcels of land which make up the wetland have been under Murray Bridge council control since last October, when a residents’ association – Riverglades Community Wetlands Incorporated – formally handed over the last one.
Association members had looked after the wetland since 1988; but with many having grown old or moved away, they voted in October 2021 to let the council turn it into a public park.
