Member for MacKillop Nick McBride could be South Australia’s next Opposition Leader
The second-term Liberal MP, who now respresents the entire Coorong district, has his sights set high.
Second-term Liberal MP Nick McBride has his sights set high in the wake of Saturday’s state election.
The re-elected Member for MacKillop, the electorate which now includes Tailem Bend and the rest of the Coorong district, hopes to win the party leadership when a ballot is called in the coming days.
That would make him the leader of the opposition to Peter Malinauskas’ incoming Labor government.
The Liberals’ top job has been vacant since Sunday, when defeated Premier Steven Marshall stepped down.
“I have fought hard to get results for MacKillop, but I know there is much more that needs to be done,” Mr McBride said the day after the election.
“I am looking forward to the challenge of the next four years.
“I am committed to getting results on roads, health, education, housing and communications.”
Mr McBride won more than 60% of first-preference votes on election day in MacKillop.
His vote share was lower at Tailem Bend – around 47% – but he was still easily the most popular candidate, ahead of Labor’s Mark Braes.
The Liberals have won a majority of votes in MacKillop in every election this century.
