To his customers, he’s known mostly as “the guy with the long hair”.
So for Oliver Asel, shaving it off was a big deal.
He did it anyway on Wednesday, submitting himself to the clippers to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
His sacrifice netted more than $2000 to brighten the lives of kids experiencing illness, injury or disability.
The stunt was part of Starlight Week, an annual fundraiser hosted by retailer EB Games.
“Starlight would help people like my brother, who went through a lot with epilepsy when he was younger,” Mr Asel said.
“It’s an awesome cause to support.
“We like to think of ways to get inventive (as an incentive) for people to donate.”
A small crowd gathered in a vacant shop at Murray Bridge Marketplace as hairdresser Sophie Cunial, from nearby Just Cuts, prepared her client for the chop.
What did his loved ones think about the decision to go with a number eight all over?
“My dad keeps saying (I should keep) a little rat’s tail,” Mr Asel said with a laugh.
“I’m not about that.”
He fidgeted a bit as truss after truss fell into his lap, but only turned a little red as the crowd applauded when the job was done.
Then he was free to go, a little more aerodynamically than before.
Last year’s Starlight Week raised more than $1.1 million nationwide.
Customers who donated to the Starlight Children’s Foundation at EB Games between August 23 and September 1 this year are eligible to enter a competition with $70,000 worth of prizes by visiting starlight.ebgames.com.au before midnight this Friday.
