What do you want your customers to see when they walk into your store or office?
Lighting design is about much more than just chasing away the darkness – done right, it can leave a powerful impression.
Take Bridge Eye Care’s recent shop fit-out on Bridge Street, Murray Bridge, with lighting installed by the team at Ahrns Electrical.
A variety of lighting styles, combined with the business’ orange and grey colour palette, focuses the eye on features around the optometrists’ space.
Ring lights highlight greenery, LED strips along the walls shine down on product displays, and soft globes guide your way into consulting rooms.
Managing director Tristan Ahrns is particularly proud of the project.
“I love architectural lighting because architects don’t over-use lights, they focus on the effect the light is going to have on the walls or the mood,” he says.
“That’s why I’m so stoked about that fit-out.
“Shop fit-outs don’t necessarily need to be clinical and bright.”

Tristan recommends taking the time to think about the way light can highlight features of your workplace:
- Ambient lighting sets the mood: will it be bright and clean, or dim and thoughtful?
- Task lighting highlights interaction points, such as a register or front desk
- Accent lighting points towards shop displays or architectural features
“The more people plan, the better the result will be,” Tristan says.
“A lot of people don’t want to spend money on designers or architects, but you may end up spending that money on fixing mistakes.
“I recommend that people design things well the first time.”
The same is true in residential design, too.
Don’t fall into the trap of just putting down lights everywhere, like so many home designers did during the 2000s.

Whatever the project you have in mind – a shopfront, consulting rooms, office space or new home – Tristan and the team at Ahrns Electrical can help you think about how best to illuminate it, as well as handling more mundane jobs like where the power points should go.
“I do quite a bit of lighting design for people,” Tristan says.
“We’ve got samples of different lights in the showroom, and a lot of catalogues as well.
“We can even give people lights to take home, if you want to hold them up against the paint and see what it might look like.”
So if you’re in need of illumination before committing to a fit-out or revamp, contact Ahrns Electrical today – they’ll be sure to shed some light on the subject.
