Ken Coventry OAM's service as a Justice of the Peace (JP) has been recognised at
the annual general meeting of the Lower Murray Justices group.

The meeting was held at Tailem Bend on September 10, and included the presentation of a 50-year membership certificate.

The certificate, which recognises Mr Coventry's 50 years of valued membership, was provided by the Royal Association of Justices of South Australia.

Dr Tom Haig JP, president of the Lower Murray Justices Group, presented the award.

Mr Conventry's nomination was originally lodged while he was employed at the Snowtown District Council.

When moving to Murray Bridge in February 1974 – another 50-year milestone – he received advice from the Attorney-General that he was now a JP.

That was effective from April 9, 1974, and in that same month he joined the Royal Association of Justices.

“I have enjoyed providing these services to the community, region and even in other parts of our state,” Mr Coventry said.

“I also had the opportunity, with a couple of other local JPs, to be appointed as a regional coroner for a number of years.

"That was a very interesting role which brings out the intricacies, uncertainties and value of life.

"Those appointments were withdrawn when government procedures regarding coronial practices changed," he said.
