The following is the author’s personal opinion.

Over the last two weeks I have learnt a lot about the important role of a community journalist, and what a future in this field could look like.

From day one, I was out with Peri, interviewing and writing my first story.

By the end of the day, my work was published.

I have had the benefit of Peri’s guidance and support when interviewing, taking photos and editing.

It’s been a busy two weeks that have flown by.

In that time, I have got the chance to report on a range of topics from housing policies and public transport to riverboats and drag races.

I have gone out into the community and talked to a range of people, as well as travelling to Mannum to report on a motorcycle museum.

Writing stories that have a direct impact on the community around me has been really rewarding.

A lot has been packed into these two weeks and the practical experience I have got out of this internship is something I will take with me for the rest of my studies and career.

Being in an environment where I have been constantly writing and getting direct feedback on my work has really helped me to improve.

Getting to bounce off Peri and work together to develop my stories has been fantastic, and I will take everything I have learnt from here and apply it into my next career endeavours.

Writing for an online publication has taught me to consider the different ways of arranging a sentence to look good visually, not just read well.

The support, guidance and encouragement I have received from Peri and Jane has made this a deeply enjoyable experience and I am grateful for all the knowledge they have shared with me.

I leave Murray Bridge News with a portfolio of stories under my belt, a range of new and improved skills, and great memories.

I’d like to thank both Jane and Peri for their mentorship and for all they have done to help me.

Kate Kinnear is a journalism student at the University of South Australia.
