Join in ... with Murray Bridge Rowing Club
Peter Newell invites you to get involved with rowing in Murray Bridge.
Murray Bridge Rowing Club has been around since 1909 and is the home of the 1924 Paris Olympics eight rowing team, affectionately known as the Murray Cods.
The club has produced rowers who have represented South Australia and Australia and gone on to win Olympic and world championship medals.
Murray Bridge News had a chat with rowing coordinator and coach Peter Newell to find out why this rowing such a wonderful sport to be involved in.
This regular feature is brought to you by Outside Developments – time to go outside.
When did you first get involved with rowing?
It was quite a while ago. I was 12 years old, so that makes it ... ahem ... about 50 years now, give or take a year or two.
What is your role with the club?
I'm the coach, I help organise our other coaches, I organise the various programs we run like the very popular school programs and other rowing activities as they come up.

What do you get out of your involvement?
I find it very rewarding to see people achieving their personal bests, seeing them enjoying the camaraderie of being a part of a club, a squad, a crew and everyone getting fit and healthy together.
What has been your fondest memory with the rowing club?
It's very difficult to pick one but a few state championships, a couple of finals at nationals are up there. I think the finest moments came when coaching crews to national titles and seeing athletes and go beyond any limits they thought they had.

What’s your goal for the future?
I’d like to see the club have all age groups involved from 12s to masters levels, providing pathways for young people to excel beyond the club and supported by a base of people of all ages as well.
Why should people join in at Murray Bridge Rowing Club?
It’s a low impact sport on the body, great for general fitness and uses all the muscles of the body. It teaches teamwork, builds networks and the social activities are always great fun.
