An apprentice jockey is recovering in hospital being airlifted away from the scene of a fall in Murray Bridge last week.

A rescue helicopter landed directly at a property on Bywaters Road last Wednesday so that she could be taken directly to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

An SA Ambulance Service spokesperson was unable to provide more information at the time, but Racing SA identified her as apprentice Rachael Kraemer in a social media post that evening.

She had been “conscious and responsive” after the accident, Racing SA said, and had surgery that night.

By Thursday morning she was “in a stable condition … resting comfortably and receiving exemplary medical care”.

“We are optimistic about Rachael’s recovery and will continue to monitor her closely.”

Kraemer had joined Racing SA’s apprentice program last year, two years after being knocked back for a position.

She has just six career race rides to her name, according to Racenet – all in the past month.

“Everyone got asked at apprentice school when we first got inducted, what’s your long-term goal,” she recalled in a Racing SA video posted just two weeks ago.

“I just wanted to ride in one race.

“Hopefully I do everyone proud.”

Two weeks before the accident she had cut all her hair off to raise $2000 for Variety, the children’s charity.
