The drying up of lucrative car boot sales which raised much-needed funds for their local hall has driven four Jervois locals to plan a Saturday “vibes market” for June 1.

Jervois Institute committee members enjoy seeing their hall being hired out for dances, darts, and special occasions, and they always like to boast about the hall’s massive facilities, but over the 20 years that market facilitator Maureen Gibson has lived at Jervois, the local hall has had little attention.

“The institute is a beauty and could tell many stories, but she really needs some well-earned maintenance to stay relevant into the future,” she said.

“We think a market is the go – it’s difficult getting the word out about almost everything these days, Facebook can only do so much, so we’re hoping that by having our first Saturday vibe market coincide with the football, we’ll bring the crowds in.”

With an ongoing necessity to keep topping up the hall’s bank account for insurance, vital maintenance, and simple general upgrades, the small committee is hoping that the market will bring in much needed funds to maintain and develop the cherished Institute.

“It’s important that the hall remains relevant, and we believe that the use of our institute is a direct reflection of our community,” Ms Gibson said.

“We’ll be having all the usual market stalls and more, with plenty of interesting and affordable food, exciting raffles, and a variety of gifts and stalls with something for everyone.

“We’re also going to have a fun open day on Sunday, May 5 from 11am to 2pm to encourage people to become a Friend of the Jervois Institute; membership will only be five dollars a year.

“Through the year we hope to have many free catch-up barbecues with games for the children and entertainment for all.

“And while you have your diaries out, why not put in our Jervois Institute Saturday night dance on June 29 – it’s always a great evening at the hall.”

She encouraged anyone interested in the future of the institute to come along to the open day for a start.

“Don’t worry, we have all the necessary committee positions covered,” she said.

“We just need some energetic people with great ideas to help us get things going.”

The Jervois Institute committee chairperson, Malcolm Clayson, treasurer Lisa Ham, vice chairperson Samatha Warner and secretary Maureen Gibson are keen to see the Friends of the Jervois Institute grow.
