How a Tailem Bend business partnered with an iconic Australian brand

When Redheads Australia set out to create a new, design-led collectible, the objective was clear: to reimagine an everyday household item and transform it into a statement piece.
The opportunity emerged earlier this year at the Reed Gift Fair in Melbourne, where the Redheads team met Katherine and John Wicker from RP Cutters, a Tailem Bend-based manufacturer, as a potential local partner capable of delivering a high-quality solution.
Redheads is one of Australia’s most enduring household brands.
Established in 1946, the company has supplied matches to Australian homes for generations and remains instantly recognisable through its iconic Redheads branding.
According to Jill, trade marketing manager at Redheads Australia, the concept for a collectible matchbox sleeve had been under consideration for some time.
“We were looking for a way to elevate a familiar household product into something more design-led and giftable, while remaining true to the Redheads brand,” Jill says.
RP Cutters was engaged to develop a bespoke metal sleeve designed to transform the Redheads matchbox into a keepsake-style item.
To meet the exact specifications, RP Cutters undertook a detailed prototyping process and invested in additional capability to ensure accuracy and consistency at scale.
Several design iterations were refined to ensure the final product met both aesthetic and functional requirements.
Rowe Aluminium, another Murraylands business, supported the project through the powder coating process, working to achieve the iconic red of the Redheads brand.

The metal sleeve slides neatly over a standard box of Redheads extra-long matches, adding a protective outer layer and bringing a touch of classic Redheads charm to an everyday essential.
Each set includes one matchbox sleeve and a box of 45 matches, perfect for lighting candles, creating a cosy atmosphere or gifting during the holiday season.
“We are thrilled with the result and looking forward to seeing the response in the lead-up to Christmas and beyond,” Jill says.
Now available through the Redheads Australia website, the Redheads matchbox sleeve represents a modern expression of an iconic brand.
