Help the environment – plant a tree at Rocky Gully

Anyone interested in helping the environment in exchange for a free lunch is invited to come and plant trees near the Rocky Gully Wetland this Sunday.

National Tree Day is usually observed in August, but autumn is a much better time of year for planting the species native to the Murraylands, according to Murray Bridge council community biodiversity officer Glenn Dean.

“There’s still warmth in the ground and planting at this time of year gives the plants a chance to get established before spring and summer,” he said.

“We get a good crowd every year and we are hoping this year will be no exception – many hands make light work.

“It’s always a great day out, so bring the whole family.”

Volunteers will meet opposite the Rocky Gully Wetland parking bay on Mannum Road and spend two hours planting, from 10am to midday, before enjoying lunch and a drink.

Anyone interested in participating should wear enclosed shoes, gloves and sun protection and bring a bottle of water.

Tree planting will be a priority for the council under its climate change action plan for the next three years, which is expected to be finalised in the coming months.
