Murray Bridge community members have one more week to provide feedback on a newly proposed Italian monument.

The monument, a funded gift from the Murray Bridge and Districts Italian Association Incorporated, would serve as a tribute to the Italian migrants who made their homes in the Murraylands region.

The project aims to be completed by June 2025, following the consultation process which ends on January 16.

The monument would celebrates Italians' enduring legacy and significant contributions through market gardening, logistics, construction, culture and family connection – all of which have contributed to the community’s development.

The monument design would include an Italian figure made of Italian Carrara white marble, shipped from Italy and carved in Adelaide by an Italian stonemason.

The black marble base of the monument would include carvings that represent the journey many made to start a new life in the Murraylands.

The figure would face in the direction of Italy and once completed, be gifted to the Rural City of Murray Bridge and community.

This significant project showcases the MBDIAI’s commitment to recognising their Italian heritage and contribution to the community.

Deb Richardson, acting general manager of community development, said the monument would give an opportunity to celebrate our multicultural heritage and honour the Italian community's contributions to the Murraylands.

“We appreciate the MBDIAI for their dedication and generosity,” she said.

“This project reflects their pride in their heritage and their commitment to preserving and sharing it with future generations.”

Community members are encouraged to provide feedback or thoughts on the Italian monument project.
