Two Murraylands women’s sporting organisations will share more than $850,000 worth of state government funding awarded on Easter Sunday.
The Murraylands Gymnastics Academy will get an extra $500,000 for its new home at Murray Bridge Showground.
The gymnasts’ training and events facility will include unisex change rooms.
The Jervois Bluds Netball Club will get $356,600 to help cover the cost of new unisex change rooms, officiating rooms and administration facilities at the town’s oval.
The funds will come through the state government’s Power of Her infrastructure and participation program, intended to help more women and girls get involved in sport.
The gymnastics academy’s Jemma Tilley had already been named South Australia’s Power of Her champion of change earlier this month.
Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Emily Bourke said the state government wanted girls and women to have opportunities to thrive in whatever sport they chose.
“Having the right facilities, programs and equipment in place gives girls and women the space and confidence they need to get involved and stay active with their local club,” she said.
“It’s inspiring to see clubs and organisations finding new and creative ways to grow female participation and facilitate high performance pathways in their communities.”
Both Murraylands projects had previously won funding from the federal government’s Play Our Way program, which had a similar aim: removing barriers to participation faced by women and girls, barriers like a lack of change rooms or toilets.
The gymnastics academy will now have a total budget of more than $2 million to play with, while the Jervois netballers’ project is up to more than $830,000 worth of government support.
The Power of Her program will provide another $10.4 million to women’s sporting organisations around South Australia in 2025-26.
