The South Eastern Freeway at Callington is one of the worst locations in regional South Australia for speeding drivers.

According to the RAA, more than 2200 offences occurred between fixed point to point speed cameras located at Callington and Mount Barker in 2023, with more than $1.3 million in fines collected.

The point to point cameras calculate the average speed of a vehicle between each location, as well as the actual speed at each point.

RAA safety and infrastructure senior manager Charles Mountain said exceeding the speed limit by the even the smallest amount could increase the risk of a serious crash.

“If you drive on the South Eastern Freeway, make sure you’re paying close attention to the speed limit, which may be lower due to roadworks or another reason that isn’t immediately obvious,” he said.

Mr Mountain said increases in speed meant a longer travel distance before being able to react and bring the vehicle to a stop in case of a road incident.
