Murray Bridge Racing Club’s former chairman, the late Reg Nolan, has been recognised with an Order of Australia Medal on Australia Day 2026.
Mr Nolan, who died in 2023, was awarded his posthumous OAM for services to horse racing on Monday.
He was a board member at the club for 28 years, and spearheaded its move from the old racecourse on Maurice Road to the new one at Gifford Hill.
He also served on the boards of Country Racing SA, of which he was a life member; the Mindarie-Halidon Racecourse; and the Murray Bridge and Districts Community Club.
In addition, his community involvement extended to the Mypolonga RSL and football club, Murray Bridge Golf Club and the local hunt club.
His successor as racing club chairman, John Leahy, described Mr Nolan’s guidance as pivotal to the club.
“Setbacks never dulled his enthusiasm,” he said.
"His determination and persistence, even when the road was difficult, gave confidence to those around him and helped carry the club through to an outcome we can all be proud of.”
In a statement on social media, the club described him as a pioneering legend.
“We take great pride in recognising his remarkable achievements and dedication as chairman,” the club said.
“His leadership style fostered a sense of unity among the committee and management, ensuring everyone worked together towards a common goal.
“Reggie had a remarkable gift for building connections with people from all walks of life, creating a network of relationships that provided expert advice and guidance.”
Murray Bridge Mayor Wayne Thorley also paid tribute to Mr Nolan, his hard work and success, at the city’s Australia Day breakfast on Monday.
