Haystack fire at Adelaide Mushrooms burns into third day
The Country Fire Service has warned about smoke in the area of Monarto South as the fight to extinguish the blaze continues.
A fire at Adelaide Mushrooms will take until at least Friday to extinguish, the Country Fire Service has warned.
The fire was reported in a stack of 500 hay bales at the Monarto South business just before six o’clock on Wednesday morning.
By 7.30am, the CFS warned commuters and residents – particularly those with breathing or heart problems – to beware of smoke in the area of the Old Princes Highway and Pope Road.
Concerned residents were advised to close doors and windows and stay indoors, and motorists warned that smoke could reduce visibility.
Firefighters were initially expected to keep working with the business to break apart the hay stack and extinguish the flames “throughout the day and into the evening”.
In an update on Thursday morning, the CFS said it would remain on site for at least another day and night.
Workers produce 240 tonnes of mushrooms every year at the Monarto South facility, or eight million per week, according to owners Costa.
The national company purchased the mushroom farm in 2013 and invested $90 million to double its production capacity five years ago.
Costa says it is the largest grower, packager and marketer of fresh mushrooms in Australia.
