A faulty battery charger may be to blame for a fire which destroyed a shed and threatened two homes in Murray Bridge's west on Tuesday.

A resident of Garden Crescent called 000 around 3.30pm after noticing that a neighbour’s shed had caught fire.

Thick, black smoke was billowing from it by the time firefighters arrived.

It took 20 minutes for a dozen firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Service and Country Fire Service to bring the fire under control.

The home’s occupants were out when firefighters got there, so they had to cut through a roller door to get at the flames.

The fire was extinguished by about 4.30pm.

No-one was injured, but about $70,000 worth of damage was done to the shed and its contents.

Investigators deemed that the fire had been an accident.
